Chainage

In short The measured distance along a pipe from a reference point (usually the camera entry), used in CCTV reports to record exactly where each defect sits.

Every CCTV inspection logs defects by chainage: "root mass at 14.2 m" means 14.2 metres of pipe from the access point. Combined with a sonde trace, chainage converts footage into a dig location.

Reading a drain report is mostly reading chainages — they turn a video into a map of the pipe's condition.

What Is It For?

Provides the along-pipe coordinate system for locating defects.

Where You'll Find It

In every CCTV inspection report and drainage survey.

Common Problems

  • Counter slippage on tight bends reducing accuracy
  • Different entry points giving different chainages for one defect

How DrainSpy Brisbane Deals With It

A CCTV drain inspection is the standard way to confirm whether this is what's happening in your pipes: the camera shows the condition on screen, a locator pinpoints the exact position and depth, and you get a recorded report before any repair decisions are made.
