Overflow Relief Gully

In short A drainage fitting (usually a grated outlet in the yard) set lower than indoor fixtures, designed to overflow outside if the sewer blocks — instead of sewage backing up inside the house.

The overflow relief gully, or ORG, is a deliberate weak point in the drainage system. Its grate sits at least 150 mm below the lowest indoor fixture, so if the sewer surcharges or blocks, wastewater pops the grate and spills into the yard rather than through the bathroom floor.

An ORG that is paved over, raised, or covered by pot plants can no longer do its job — one of the most common defects found during drainage inspections.

What Is It For?

Provides a safe external overflow point when the sewer drain blocks or surcharges.

Where You'll Find It

In the ground outside, often near a bathroom or laundry wall, with a loose grated cap.

Common Problems

  • Grate paved over or raised above fixture level, defeating its purpose
  • Dry trap letting sewer smells escape
  • Overflowing regularly — a sign of a partial downstream blockage
  • Garden beds and mulch burying the grate

How DrainSpy Brisbane Deals With It

A CCTV drain inspection is the standard way to confirm whether this is what's happening in your pipes: the camera shows the condition on screen, a locator pinpoints the exact position and depth, and you get a recorded report before any repair decisions are made.
