Backfall

1 min read Updated 6 Jul 2026 DrainSpy Brisbane
In short A section of drain that slopes the wrong way, so water runs backwards or pools instead of draining. A common defect found during CCTV inspections.

Backfall usually appears when ground settles under a poorly compacted trench, when tree roots lift a pipe, or when the original installation was simply laid flat. Water and solids sit in the affected section, forming a permanent pond inside the pipe.

On camera, backfall shows up as standing water with the camera lens dipping underwater. Persistent gurgling, slow drainage and repeat blockages at the same spot are classic symptoms.

What Is It For?

A defect term — describes lost gradient rather than a designed feature.

Where You'll Find It

Anywhere along a drain, most often under driveways, filled ground or large trees.

Common Problems

  • Repeat blockages at the same point
  • Sludge and fat accumulating in ponded water
  • Odours from stagnant wastewater
  • Gradual worsening as settlement continues

How DrainSpy Brisbane Deals With It

A CCTV drain inspection is the standard way to confirm whether this is what's happening in your pipes: the camera shows the condition on screen, a locator pinpoints the exact position and depth, and you get a recorded report before any repair decisions are made.
